Spain - Buying, Selling Or Using A Car

General: Apart from certain exotic marques virtually all cars available in the UK and Ireland are also available in Spain. Unless you are importing an exotic or classic car it is always recommended that you purchase a new or second hand car in Spain not only because of the left-hand drive requirement but because there could be negative insurance, maintenance or warranty issues. It should also be noted that it is a legal requirement to re-register a foreign car in Spain once such a car has been in Spain for over 6 months. EU Driving Licenses do not have to be exchanged for Spanish Driving Licenses but if you intend to be driving in Spain for over 6 months you will need to obtain a Certificado de Empadronamiento from your local Council (Ayuntamiento) confirming your address - This in turn needs to be lodged with the Direccion General de Trafico. Insurance rates in Spain are higher than in the UK but significantly less than in the Republic of Ireland. New car prices are roughly the same as those in the UK and again about 20% to 30% below those in the Republic of Ireland. It is always recommended that wherever there is any doubt the excellent Real Automovil Club de Espana (RACEI is contacted for advice.

Buying or Selling a Car: All cars must have a Road Tax Certificate Ipermiso de circulacion) which gives permission for the car to be on the road plus a Road Worthiness Certificate (tarjeta de inspection technical de vehiculos - 1TV) which is like the British MOT Test. There is a transfer of ownership section within the permiso de circulacion but it is recommended that you directly notify the jefatura provincial de trafico. Also make sure that the local car tax known as impuesto sobre la ciurculacion de vehiculos has been paid to date.

Facts:

The Road Worthiness Certificate (tarjeta de inspection technical de vehiculos - ITV): New cars don't need an ITV Certificate until they reach 4 told; from then on it is done every 2 years; then every year; then every 6 months and so on.
